Our Philosophy​

At Stepping Forward LA, we believe that every young adult leaving foster care deserves more than just a fresh start — they deserve belonging, guidance, and opportunity.

Los Angeles County has the largest foster care population in the nation, with over 1,000 young adults aging out of the system each year — many without a permanent support system. Without the foundation of consistent relationships or access to resources, too many face homelessness, poverty, incarceration, and mental health challenges. But we see more than statistics — we see resilience, strength, and potential.

Our approach is rooted in community, empowerment, and support. We center the voices of former foster youth in everything we do — from designing our app to building content creation. Our signature initiatives — including our housing program, co-mentorship, one-on-one support, and our three-month paid internship — are built to meet young adults where they are and walk with them toward their goals.

 

Through our SFLA App, we offer thousands of youth-created resources — made by and for those with lived experience. It's more than a tool — it's a space where community is cultivated, and futures are envisioned.
